Pills to Stay Hard: What Actually Works, and What You Can Buy Without a Prescription

You want something that helps you get hard and stay hard, and you want to know which pill is worth your money. Here is the honest version.

The short answer. Two kinds of pill help men stay hard. Prescription ED tablets work the same night but need a doctor (or, in the UK, a pharmacist). Over the counter supplements are taken every day and build up over four to eight weeks. If you buy a supplement, pick one that prints the dose of every ingredient on the label.

What pills make you stay hard?

Short answer: prescription tablets for a same night effect, daily supplements for steady support.

An erection is a blood flow event. When you are aroused, the arteries in the penis relax and widen, blood rushes in faster than it can drain, and that pressure is what keeps you hard. After 40, the artery lining makes less of the signal (nitric oxide) that tells those arteries to relax, which is a big reason erections get softer and fade sooner. Here is the full explanation.

The two kinds of pill target that same system from different ends:

Can you buy pills to stay hard over the counter?

Short answer: supplements, yes, everywhere. Prescription tablets, only in the UK, from a pharmacist.

In the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, the prescription tablets need a prescription. Telehealth services can arrange one online, but it is still a medical consultation. Anything sold on a shelf or a website without one is a supplement.

The UK is the exception. According to the NHS, one of the prescription class tablets can be bought from a pharmacy, while the others still need a prescription. So if you are in the UK and searching for "tablets to stay hard", that pharmacy option exists. The NHS also warns that many websites selling these medicines online sell fakes.

Do pills to stay hard work fast?

Short answer: prescription tablets, yes. Supplements, no, and that is not a flaw.

A supplement is not a same night pill. The ingredients with human research behind them were tested over weeks: maca for 12 weeks, L-citrulline for a month, tongkat ali over several weeks. A fair test of any supplement is daily use for four to eight weeks, then an honest look at whether things have changed.

That timing is also a useful filter. A supplement that promises you will be hard in 30 minutes is either overselling, or it contains something that is not on the label, which brings us to the next question.

What about the pills at the gas station, Walmart or online?

Short answer: be careful with anything that promises an instant result.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that products contaminated with hidden ingredients, including products sold for sexual performance, turn up in popular online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Walmart, and in stores including pharmacies, gas stations, convenience stores and supplement stores. The hidden ingredient is often a prescription strength drug that the label does not mention. That is a real risk if you take nitrate medication for your heart, because the combination can drop your blood pressure dangerously.

The practical rule: buy from the brand's own official order page, where the label, the guarantee and the seller's terms are all visible before you pay.

Which supplement ingredients actually have research?

Short answer: a few do, at the right dose. Most products bury that dose in a blend.

IngredientWhat the research showsDose used in studies
Tongkat aliRaised testosterone in clinical trials, most in men who started low (PubMed 36013514)200 to 400 mg a day
L-citrullineIn a small trial, hardness improved to normal in 12 of 24 men with mild ED, against 2 of 24 on placebo (PubMed 21195829)1,500 mg a day
L-arginineImproved erectile function in mild to moderate ED in a 2019 meta analysis (PubMed 30770070)1,500 to 5,000 mg a day
MacaMore self reported desire than placebo after 12 weeks; weak for firmness (PubMed 20691074)1,500 to 3,000 mg a day
Panax ginsengOnly trivial effects on erectile function in a 2021 Cochrane review, low certainty (PubMed 33871063)varies
Horny goat weedA real mechanism in the lab, almost no trials in mennot established

Two lessons from that table. First, the amount matters more than the name: arginine and citrulline only showed results at gram level doses, and many blends list 50 or 100 mg. Second, no supplement replaces a prescription tablet for a same night result. What a good one can do is support drive, energy and blood flow over time. The ingredient by ingredient detail is in our herb research guide and our nitric oxide guide.

What to check before you buy stay hard pills

Four checks separate a supplement worth testing from one that is not:

  1. Every dose is on the label. If the label shows a "proprietary blend" with one total weight, you cannot tell whether the useful ingredients are there in a useful amount.
  2. The lead ingredient is in the research range. Compare the label with the dose column above. One ingredient at a real dose beats eight at a token dose.
  3. A one time purchase with a written guarantee. No hidden subscription, and a money back guarantee long enough to cover a proper six to eight week test, written into the seller's terms.
  4. Sold from the official order page. Not a marketplace listing and not a gas station shelf, for the reasons the FDA gives above.

Our pick, and where to get it in your country

Our pick: Jelly Boost. It passes all four checks. Every dose is printed on the label, it leads with 200 mg of tongkat ali (inside the range the trials used), it is a one time purchase with no subscription, and a 60 day money back guarantee covers the whole order, enough for a proper six week test. It is one gummy a day, sold from its official order page. To be straight with you, its beet root and L-arginine are there in supporting amounts, well below study doses, so think of it as steady support for drive, energy and stamina over a few weeks, not a same night pill.

Readers in Canada, Australia and New Zealand can also buy Jelly Boost. It ships to all three countries, as well as the United States.

Packs run from $49 to $79 a bottle.

Prices can change and there may be a promotion running, so check the current price on the official page before you order.

In the UK? Jelly Boost does not ship there. The gummy we cover for UK readers is IronPulseX, which has the same printed doses.

When to see a doctor before trying any pill

Skip the supplement aisle and book an appointment first if any of these apply:

Erection problems can be an early sign of heart and blood vessel disease, so a check up is worth it even if you also end up trying a supplement. If you want to start without any pill, these are the habits with the best evidence.

Common questions

What is the number one pill to stay hard?

There is no single number one. Prescription ED tablets have the strongest evidence for a same night effect, and a doctor picks between them based on how long you need it to last and your health. Among supplements, no product has been tested head to head against the others, so the honest way to choose is by the dose printed on the label.

Are there pills to stay hard with no side effects?

No pill is free of side effects for everyone. Prescription tablets have known side effects and are unsafe with nitrate heart medications. Herbal supplements are usually well tolerated in studies, but they can still interact with blood pressure, heart or blood thinning medication, so check with a doctor if you take any of those.

Can you stay hard after ejaculation?

Most men lose their erection after ejaculation and need a recovery period before the next one, and that period gets longer with age. It is normal, not a sign of a problem. No supplement removes it. Better overall erection quality, sleep and fitness can shorten the gap, but there is no pill that keeps you hard straight through it.

Are tablets to stay hard in the UK the same thing?

Tablets is simply the UK word for pills. The big difference in the UK is that one prescription class ED tablet can be bought from a pharmacy after a short chat with the pharmacist, according to the NHS. Herbal supplements are a separate category, sold as food supplements rather than medicines.

How long do stay hard supplements take to work?

Plan on four to eight weeks of daily use. The ingredients with human research, such as tongkat ali, maca and L-citrulline, were tested over weeks, not hours. If a supplement promises a result the same night, treat that as a warning sign rather than a selling point.
